Bahia Sustainable Community, Novato, CA
The design of a 15 acre sustainable community restores 98% of unique marsh and black oak woodland ecosystem on the edge of the Petaluma River. 28 Units of Senior housing are nestled into the existing topography among and extensive food forest and multiple communal pocket parks. Passive Design, Solar Energy and responsible water management combine to create a surplus of food, and natural resources. The restored land is dedicated to the community as a permanent educational and recreational amenity.

Finding the optimal balance between minimal expenditure of resources and their highest and best use informs siting, orientation, materials and building systems of our high performance buildings. Preservation and reuse of existing structures and materials are essential to our efforts to reduce waste and our delight in the poetry of bringing to light what is already there. Our authentic consideration of the community and a transparent and fluid process pave the way for truly organic and enduring solutions.
